A person with a hidden identity is often used in thriller films because it signifies something mysterious and most possibly bad. The idea of not knowing what something is brings the audience to the edge of their seat because of the tension it creates. Mirrors are used in thriller films to sometimes portray emotions in a character which they may not want to revel to anyone else around them, also broken mirrors connote bad luck so it foreshadow something bad happening later on in the film. Bad weather such as lightening, rain and fog is a pathetic fallacy, which signifies whether something good or bad will happen depending on what type of weather it is. Fire can be used to foreshadow something bad such as death, for example a lit candle going out. Smoke or fog creates a more mysterious and creepy setting as not everything can fully be identified because the audience can’t see every detail. Smoke can also signify the start of something.
