Another main convention of thriller films are bad omen. Examples are black cats, slamming doors and smoke or fire. Black cats are known to be unlucky, so featuring them in thrillers suggests that something bad is going to happen.

Also, the use pathetic fallacies set a bad atmosphere, so the audience expects a negative event to take place. Examples of pathetic fallacies in thrillers are rain, thunder, lightning and storms.

Red herrings are another main convention for thrillers. Red herrings are when the plot leads the audience in a certain way, but does not have significance in the rest of the film. The plot purposely misleads the audience, which causes them to focus on a different part of the story. A well-known example of when this happens is in Psycho by Alfred Hitcock, where the main character steals money at the beginning of the film. This causes the audience to believe that the storyline will be about her having the money, but it does not play a large part in the plot.
